Preqin League Tables hedge fund performance methodology

Preqin's proprietary methodology showcases the top-performing and most consistent industry players.

Hedge fund performance


The top-performing hedge funds are based on a ranking by net returns over the periods 2021 and 2019-2021. Funds must report a full 12-month performance track record over 2021, and a full 36-month track record over 2019-2021, in order to be eligible to be listed. The tables are based on data reported to Preqin in early 2022. Although fund rankings are not expected to alter significantly, final performance tables are subject to change as more data becomes available.

Eligibility requirements

  • Fund profile must be visible on Preqin Pro. 

  • Fund profile status must be ‘Active’. 

  • Fund profile status must be 'Commingled', 'Listed', or 'Managed Account'.

  • Completed 12-months’ worth of monthly return track record as of December 31st, 2023.

  • Fund auditor must be tagged to the relevant profile.

Ranking criteria

  • The top-performing funds presented in this report are based on a ranking by net returns over 2023. Funds must report a full 12-month performance track record over 2023 to be eligible for listing in our one-year league tables. The tables are based on data reported to Preqin in early 2024. Although fund rankings are not expected to alter significantly, final performance tables are subject to change as more data becomes available.

Data review process

  • For those funds shortlisted for a place in the League Tables, we perform a review of the performance data that has been collected for the relevant profile.

  • Performance data for the hedge fund League Tables presented in the 2024 iteration was extracted in early March 2024.

What was the time frame for consideration?

  • Funds must report a full 12-month performance track record over 2023 to be eligible to be listed in our one-year league tables.

  • Annually, in early Q2.

What's the difference between the free League Tables and the full League Tables in Preqin Pro?

  • Preqin's free access League Tables are based on a snapshot taken as of early March 2024. The League Tables in Preqin Pro are interactive with our live datasets and rank funds on a separate set of eligibility and ranking criteria.

Was a fee required to participate in the Preqin League Tables?

  • No, all firms and funds that met the eligibility requirements were considered for the Preqin League Tables free-of-charge.
